Attempting To Be Professional With Computers Is A Nightmare

Back when I was kicking around the idea of starting a laboratory of my own I just sort of walked around and day dreamed. Now that I have actually committed to doing something with my time I am realizing just how complicated becoming “professional” can be. There are just so many steps! To go from “just a guy” to “a guy that goes things” takes a lot of steps. There are two sides to this movement: personal growth and professional steps.

Personal Growth

There were (are?) a lot of things that I need(ed?) to change about myself to begin to start a laboratory (or at least be successful at it). A short list of what I am focusing on is this:

  1. Attention span
  2. Exercise and movement
  3. Mindfulness
  4. Self love

Focusing these things have actually generated a greater self of well-being in me and my life has improved for the positive.

Professional Steps

This is the portion that takes more effort than I anticipated. With my personal growth goals I know what my shortcomings are so I know what kind of work it is going to take. Starting my own laboratory? I am fully ignorant on what that sort of activity takes. Here is a list of what I have done so far, and then a list of what I need to do further:

Done So Far

  1. Got a professional domain for my email and resume: www.jeremyheckt.com/
  2. Acquired some equipment (I got a server!)
  3. Financial saving
  4. Started writing

What I Need To Do Further

  1. Get some more equipment!
  2. More financial saving
  3. Write way more often
  4. Sit down and plan my first few big projects
  5. Heat up the garage as it is cold in the winter

I feel lost, I feel like I am treading in some liquid I have never gotten into before — and I love it.

Want to read my personal blog? This article actually did FINALLY appear in my laboratory’s blog, https://blog.letseatlabs.com, because I think I did basically lock myself out of my previous dev instance on my Raspberry Pi. It is now running on a Debian VM.
